UPCOMING PROGRAMS:

(If you have any questions about upcoming programs, or if you have an idea for a program, contact Shevonne Travers at joslinprograms@gmail.com)

Picture
On Monday evening, February 13th, Paul Searls--historian, professor and Vermont author--will share how, beginning in the late 1890's, Vermont’s development unfolded, tracing the competing efforts of officials to promote and conserve Vermont’s natural beauty, while attracting business and industry. Today, this paradox remains. How do we preserve the rural and small town character of Vermont, while encouraging economic growth? How do we balance progress with tradition?

A four week playwriting workshop will be held at the Joslin Memorial Library on Thursday afternoons from 1-2:30 p.m. beginning on February 2nd through February 23rd. Jeanne Beckwith, a prolific playwright whose plays have been staged in Vermont, New York, California, Dublin and Istanbul--and teaches literature and theater arts on the college level--will guide participants as they discover the basic elements of playwriting, plot and character development, and write a 10 minute play applying these concepts.

Joslin Relay Write
For storytellers of all ages!
Month of February

Join Joslin's Relay Writing game! Here's how it works: sometime in the month of February, you'll be notified that it's time for your leg of the relay write. Come to the library and pick up the story, read what others have contributed, add writing and/or illustrations for your chapter (you'll have a couple days to complete it), then drop it off so the team can continue to "The End."

We'll assign relay "teams" based on how many folks sign up and their ages. Everyone from emergent writers to adults are welcome to sign-up - even young storytellers who need someone to transcribe can join in!

What does it mean to be white in this world and in our community? Join the Mad River Valley Libraries and the Peace & Justice Center to explore questions like this in Unpacking Whiteness, an online workshop on Wednesday February 16th from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Specifically designed for white individuals, this facilitated discussion is an opportunity to process how white supremacy culture is harmful to them. The space created will give white people an opportunity to work towards collective liberation and allow the emotional needs of Black, Indigenous and People of Color to take priority in multi-racial spaces.
Visit a MRV Library website for a link to register directly with the Peace & Justice Center or use the following link. https://tinyurl.com/ycyryc3d.

For those of you who are enthralled with solving riddles while keeping yourself active, our brand-new  “Who Done Wrote It and Who Done Solved It” game is the perfect literary game to keep your mind and your body sharp. Do it on your own or bring a friend or a family member along with you.

Beginning later this month, you will discover multiple riddles about fictional detectives and the authors who created them attached to poles and posts throughout Main Street--from the elementary school all the way to the Waitsfield Covered Bridge. There will be questions about adult-oriented detectives and their authors for adults to solve, and questions about child-oriented detectives and their authors for youth to solve. And to make it a bit easier, most of the detectives are characters within books that are available in the library.

Forms for this game will soon be available for pick up at the library. Once you have done your best to solve the riddles, we want you to return your form with your name and contact information to the library. In mid-February, we will select a few crime solving sleuth winners for a prize.

Join Angie Thomas, the author of five acclaimed books, on May 26 at 7:00 pm for a free Zoom presentation for Vermont Reads 2020. Her bestselling debut novel, The Hate U Give, won multiple national and international awards. Vermont Reads has introduced the book to thousands of Vermonters of all ages, who engaged with Thomas’ YA novel through a variety of community activities.
We are excited to learn more about Angie Thomas’ work, her creative process, and what it means to be one of the most influential American writers today.
Angie’s second novel, On the Come Up, is a #1 New York Times bestseller as well, and a film is in development with Paramount Pictures with Angie acting as a producer. In 2020, Angie released Find Your Voice: A Guided Journal to Writing Your Truth as a tool to help aspiring writers tell their stories. In 2021, Angie returned to the world of Garden Heights with Concrete Rose, a prequel to The Hate U Give focused on seventeen-year-old Maverick Carter that debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list.
This evening event (and a related event for Vermont schools the following day) is sponsored in partnership with Vermont Department of Libraries with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Partnerships for Literacy and Learning, Vermont Library Association and the Vermont School Library Association.

Tails, Tales, Tees, & Totes - Design Collaboration for 2021 SLP!
Calling all artists and animal lovers! This year, we'll be celebrating critters of all kinds with "Tails and Tales", the 2021 Summer Learning Program. Help us kick things off with our 2nd annual design collaboration. Here's how it works: you draw your favorite animal in the box on the entry form, drop it off at the library, and we'll add your picture to the design for this year's SLP T-shirts and totebags.

Tips for entries:
For the best results, your submission should be a line drawing in black and white (i.e. avoid shading and "sketchy" lines). Black permanent marker works well. This helps us translate your drawing to a screen-printed image.

Entries are now due May 22nd. All ages welcome. Either click the button above to download a printable entry form or drop by the Rt. 100 entrance of the library where printed entry forms are available. Submissions can be left in the designated spot (please see posted instructions below the book drop).
