The Great Vermont Dragon Egg Hunt

About this project:

The Vermont Fairy Tale festival presents the Great Vermont Dragon Egg Hunts starting September 18th. Over 100 libraries across the state are participating, including all three Mad River Valley Libraries. One dragon egg will be hidden in each area of the Mad River Valley. Joslin's egg will be found somewhere in Fayston or Waitsfield (please ONLY look on public land). Stay tuned, because daily clues posted on our website and facebook September 18th-25th will lead seekers to the egg in their town. The lucky seeker who finds Joslin’s egg may return it to Joslin and win a beautifully crafted Dragon Puppet!

UPDATE: The egg has been found! Congratulations to the Adair family on their excellent riddle solving and determination. But keep looking, because there are still eight tokens in the "nest" that other players can redeem at the library for a small prize (please just take one per family)!

Clue #1
September 18th

"Ahoy, dragon seeker!
Your adventure awaits -
If you solve all the riddles
You’ll find me post haste!

Should you address
A letter to 'egg'
Your missive would go
To a near town instead."

Picture
Clue #2
September 19th

"Have you determined
In which town my egg lies?
Now see from this next clue
What you can surmise:

Though I can just fly
To where the dragon egg’s sleeping
You’d have to drive
Somewhere 'über ebene'"

Picture
 Clue #3
September 20th

Perhaps you now know
The road where it’s hiding
But where along there
Might you have an egg sighting?

First two are pre-
And kinder- comes after
Years go by quickly
Six make the latter!

This riddle’s acrostic
(Omit the four top ones)
Now add one more word
hint….“My dear Watson”
Picture
 Clue #4
September 21st

"Now I confess,
I’ve led you astray
For the egg is not there,
But it’s not far away.

To narrow your search,
I’ll share with you this:
Something on 'Aspen'
Just might be amiss

Type in my species
Then look for my gold,
The details have answers:
The clue is in bold"

 Clue #5
September 22nd

"
Have you found the online clue

In our catalog?
Now let’s backtrack, going old school
This one’s analog:

Pen and paper’s what you’ll need
To solve this Dewey clue:
Dragon’s have a favorite number
And it’s 398.2!

Next you’ll need to double it
And then you’ll add .2
Check the shelves to find the path
That you’ll now pursue
"

 Clue #6
September 23rd

"
Now you might know
A common activity
One might partake in
In my egg’s vicinity

My near neighbor, troll,
I overheard yelling
When three cloven creatures
Trip trapped ‘cross his dwelling

So take care; walk softly
You will have to cross.
It’s the only way to egg
Unless you like soggy socks!
"

 Clue #7
September 24th

“Have you deduced
The mode of access?
You’re getting so close
To my dragon egg’s nest

As you are walking
Check what it says
Right on the back of
Bang., Whoomph, and Whizz

Be sure you read
In the order I’ve written,
Her holes are so close
To the place my egg’s hidden”
Picture
 Clue #8
September 25th

“Head to the end
Of the sisters’ story
And look for the cavities;
You’re so close to glory!

Standing there
And gazing south,
Find a hole like
The earth’s open mouth

I thought this would be
The most secret place
To lay down my egg
In a nest sound and safe
.”
